SLCA – SAAA SLOVENIAN LANGUAGE ONLINE COURSE 2021

In the month of November 2021, the Slovenian Language and Culture Association – SLCA started a special intensive course in Slovenian language for the members of the Slovenian Australian Academic Association – SAAA: forty lessons, twice a week for 1.5 hours each. Amongst the larger class, four students have been subsidised by the SAAA.

The students had a great start to the course. There is a variety of students, coming from different backgrounds with different interests and reasons why they would like to become more fluent in Slovenian. The lessons are structured to meet individual and class goals. There is a keen interest in Slovenian history, literature and art.

The program is using a textbook and workbook called Slovenska beseda v živo 1a, these are great for building their grammatical skills and complementing the second part of the lesson that is based around building vocabulary and comprehension. The lessons are varied and include a 30-second impromptu speech about a given topic, e.g. free time, going to hairdresser etc. in addition to learning grammar, reading Slovenian stories, listening to Slovenian music and talking about the unique culture and history that has influenced our language.

So far, the students have learned about Slovenian numbers, they have then connected these to personal documents, phone numbers, dates of birth and more.  They have read a story about Santa, from the story they have talked about the rooms in their house, so their lesson took them to learning about houses, apartments, directions and living.

The course tries to use many different methods of learning, so the students are constantly engaged and progressing. It is not just the language, they will also be learning about the country and its culinary peculiarities, its cities’ beat and its art and literary notables that marked the Slovenian space.

Both the SLCA and SAAA are confident in the success of our students and excited to be on this journey with them.

With the support of the Government Office for Slovenians Abroad, the SAAA is co-financing the participation of four members of the SAAA in a 60-hour online Slovene language course learning, organised by the Slovenian Language and Culture Association Qld Inc. The online course is placed in the time zone of the Australian state of Queensland, which is especially suitable for candidates from these parts of the world.
