Abstract: Dejan will give a short presentation about the different Slovenian communities around the world – in which aspects they are similar and their differences. Maintaining the ‘Slovenian identity’ in the second and third generations is a challenge to all communities and each are trying to address it in different ways. There are many opportunities and possibilities for Slovenia to improve its policies towards Slovenians living around the world. This issue is becoming increasingly relevant today, due to statistics suggesting that almost a fifth of Slovenians from each generation migrate abroad every year. As the director of the Institute ASEF, which aims to connect Slovenian scientists in Slovenia and around the world, Dejan will present their work and vision for further cooperation between Slovenia and its diaspora.

Bio: Dejan Valentinčič PhD is the Director of the Institute ASEF and assistant professor and researcher at Graduate School of Governmental and European Studies and School of Advanced Social Studies. He studied law and sociology. In the past two years he was also lecturing at Centre for European Studies of Harvard University, Cleveland State University, Santa Clara University, all USA and Pontificia Universidad Catolica Argentina in Buenos Aires. His research is primarily based on Slovenians outside the Slovenia and minorities living in Slovenia. He is the author of research monograph Resia: A valley and its people between Slovenian, Italian and its own identity.
